Big blocks here sit on the western side, and the forest reserve closes the northern edge. This page sets out what that means for the plumbing.

What Tank-Fed Properties Need From Plumbing

A property runs on town water, tank water, or both, and the plumbing follows whichever supply feeds it. A tank-fed home gets its pressure from a pump or from the height the tank sits at, rather than from the street main.

The drinking rule comes from the QBCC guide. Tank water fills a drinking glass only where no reticulated supply reaches the property, because town water is the safer pour.

The rest of the job sits with whoever owns the tank. Dirt and microorganisms can get into a private one, so a Unitywater customer on tank water manages its condition as well as how much it holds.

Three parts of that system sit on our list:

  1. The tank

our rainwater tank plumbing page covers the outlets and connections a tank-fed home needs.

  2. The pump

a tank pump pushes stored water out to the taps at usable pressure.

  3. The filter

our water filter installation page covers the cartridge side, which anyone may swap as unregulated work.

Gas Bottles on a Rural Property

Keep every LPG bottle out in the open, well ventilated and well clear of excess heat and anything that could ignite the gas. Spare cylinders belong in one designated secure spot. Each valve stays sealed whenever a bottle sits unused, empty ones included.

A portable bottle, the barbecue and camping sort, has to show a current ten-year test stamp before a refill station will fill it. Attendants check that date on each cylinder handed over the counter.

One behaviour explains the storage rules. LPG weighs more than air, so a leak settles into low ground and drains rather than drifting away, which is why bottles live where air can move through.

Gas work belongs to a licensed gasfitter alone: installing, altering, repairing, servicing, testing and certifying a gas system, along with its pipework and connections. Our gas cooktop installation page covers the appliance end of that.

A safety note on the bottles. Sniff for a rotten-egg odour near cylinders and appliances, and never repair or take off a cylinder valve yourself.

If you smell gas, switch the appliance off, open the doors and windows, and keep away from electrical switches. Shut the gas supply at the meter or bottle if the smell stays, and phone (07) 3523 6417, or 000 if the smell will not clear.

Digging the Trench Versus Laying the Pipe

You own the pipe. Unitywater holds the street mains and the sewer, and every metre of pipe downstream of your meter is the property owner's to maintain. On a big block, the whole run is yours.

Replacing that supply line on an existing home is notifiable work. A licensed plumber does the swap, lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC within 10 business days, and leaves a copy of the notice with you.

The trench is a different story. Digging it out and filling it in are unskilled tasks around a plumbing job, open to anyone. The pipe that goes in the trench stays licensed work.

Mains Pressure on Rural Blocks

Pipe length and pipe width set what you lose. Friction eats pressure along the whole run, and the longer and skinnier the line, the more it takes. The taps furthest from the supply flow weakest.

A pressure pump turns that around. Fitted at the house end of a tank supply or a long service line, it lifts the pressure so taps, showers and appliances get a usable flow instead of a trickle.

Big Blocks, Tanks and the Forest Edge

A tank-fed home here can stand a long way from the street, which stretches the owner's pipe, lengthens the pump's push and puts every joint on the run in your maintenance column.

Families hold most of this ground. Prince of Peace Lutheran College teaches Years 7 to 12 from its Henderson Road campus, the suburb's only school. Owner-occupier families fill most of the detached houses around it, with separate dwellings making up 81.2 per cent of homes at the last census.

The hills shape the work too. The blocks sit on rock and reactive clay that swells and shrinks with the seasons. The forest edge keeps big trees close to long ground lines, so joints on an old run earn a careful look.

Acreage Plumbing Questions

Call (07) 3523 6417

Why is pressure low at the end of a long run in Everton Hills?

Yes, friction is the usual cause. Every metre of pipe rubs a little pressure away, and a long, thin run gives up the most, so the furthest tap flows weakest. A pressure pump fitted at the house end puts that right.

Can I drink tank water at my Everton Hills property?

No, not while town water reaches you. The QBCC guide limits rainwater to drinking use only where no town supply exists, because town water is safer and steadier. On Unitywater land the owner looks after both the tank's condition and how much it holds.

Who can replace the water line from the meter to the house?

A licensed plumber, and nobody else. Swapping that supply pipe on an existing home counts as notifiable work. We lodge a Form 4 with the QBCC within 10 business days and leave a copy of the notice with you.

Can I dig the trench for a new line myself?

Yes, for the digging and the filling. Queensland counts both jobs as unskilled work around a plumbing job, open to anyone. The pipework in your trench stays licensed work, so our plumbers lay, join and test the line.

Where should I keep spare gas bottles on my property?

Outside, in a spot where air moves freely, well clear of excess heat and ignition sources, with spare bottles held in one designated secure place. LPG outweighs air, so escaping gas settles into low ground and drains instead of drifting away. Sniff for a rotten-egg odour, and never repair or take off a cylinder valve yourself.
